Ofsted: rank colleges by student employment rates

Colleges should be ranked by the number of students getting jobs amid continuing concerns over unemployment rates among teenagers, according to Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills). The Government should use “destination data” to make sure institutions are properly preparing 16- to 19-year-olds for the workplace, it was claimed. In a report, the education watchdog said the best colleges placed a strong emphasis on developing students’ employment skills such as problem-solving, working as a team, applying literacy and numeracy, computing and managing their time properly. But it was feared that most lecturers failed to track teenagers’ progress to make sure courses actually led to jobs.
The disclosure comes amid continuing concerns over unemployment rates among young people who have been hardest hit by the economic downturn. Data released in the summer showed that 968,000 16- to 24-year-olds were not in education, employment or training (NEET) during the second quarter of 2012 – one-in-six of the age group. Les cadres sont-ils présents sur les réseaux sociaux professionnels? Comment perçoivent-ils ces outils? Les jugent-ils utiles?
C’est notamment à ces questions que répond l’enquête inédite de l’Apec auprès de 1 600 cadres. Selon cette étude, 53% d’entre eux sont inscrits sur au moins un réseau social professionnel. Par ailleurs, elle révèle que les cadres portent un regard plutôt positif sur ces outils: six sur dix les jugeant utiles dans une recherche d’emploi. 53% des cadres inscrits sur au moins un réseau social professionnel
Un peu plus de la moitié des cadres sont inscrits sur au moins un RSP (réseau social professionnel). Viadeo constitue le principal d’entre eux, suivi par LinkedIn. Toutefois, certains cadres inscrits apparaissent passifs sur ces réseaux. 7% d’entre eux ne se rendent jamais sur ces sites. Le taux d’inscription « réel », c’est-à-dire la proportion de cadres inscrits sur ces réseaux et qui les utilisent, n’est donc que de 49%.
Par ailleurs, ce taux d’inscription décroît fortement avec l’âge. Il s’élève à 77% chez les cadres de moins de 30 ans et à 66% chez les trentenaires. En revanche, seuls 46% des quadragénaires et 39% des cadres âgés de 50 ans et plus sont inscrits sur ces réseaux.
Les cadres en recherche de mobilité plus souvent inscrits en proportion
Il existe un lien étroit entre recherche de mobilité et inscription sur les réseaux sociaux professionnels. Les cadres en recherche active pour changer d’entreprise sont en effet plus nombreux, en proportion, à être inscrits sur au moins un réseau social professionnel (69%) que les cadres simplement en veille sur le marché de l’emploi (61%), et plus encore que les cadres qui n’ont pas l’intention de changer d’entreprise dans un avenir proche (45%).
Les cadres sont inscrits sur les sites de réseaux sociaux professionnels avant tout pour entretenir des contacts professionnels existants, nouer de nouveaux contacts et publier leur CV en ligne. Mais ces usages divergent selon le profil de mobilité des cadres. Les cadres en recherche active pour changer d’entreprise indiquent utiliser les réseaux sociaux professionnels avant tout pour publier leur CV (54%), nouer de nouveaux contacts (41%) et consulter des offres d’emploi (33%). À l’inverse, les cadres qui ne sont pas en attente de mobilité externe indiquent utiliser ces sites essentiellement pour entretenir des contacts professionnels existants (54%). Les enjeux du contrat de génération

Validé par les partenaires sociaux, le projet de loi devrait être voté en janvier prochain. Pour la première fois, deux problématiques majeures vont être traitées: le chômage des jeunes et le faible taux d’activité des seniors. En pleine crise économique, la pertinence du projet est incontestable. Pourtant, dans les faits, la réalité est parfois plus complexe.C’est en pleine année européenne sur le vieillissement actif et de la solidarité intergénérationnelle que la France décide de lancer son contrat de génération. Ce nouveau type de contrat sera obligatoire dans les entreprises de plus de 299 salariés et facultatif pour les autres. Pour les inciter à jouer le jeu, l’Etat versera aux entreprises 4 000 euros par an pendant trois ans. Par ailleurs, l'ARF (Association des Régions de France) approuve le plan de refondation de l’association. Les régions renouvellent leur volonté de voir l’Afpa reprendre toute sa place au sein de leurs services publics régionaux de formation professionnelle, au service des demandeurs d’emplois et des salariés dont l’emploi est menacé.
Elles sont prêtes à étudier avec l’Afpa les modifications à apporter à la cartographie de l’implantation des centres Afpa, afin de mieux répondre aux besoins des territoires et aux exigences des services publics de formation. Dans ce cadre, elles engageront des réflexions avec les différents opérateurs sur la mutualisation nécessaire des plateaux techniques.

Why college grads are heading back...to community college
By David Koeppel. College grads are heading back to school, but not grad school. In some cases, associate's degrees offer more economic bang for their buck than bachelor's degrees.
In the aftermath of the Great Recession, thousands of students have learned the bitter lesson that the college degrees they paid for do not guarantee a steady job. In response, many have opted for grad school to give their status, pay, and job security a bump. Then there are those who seem to be taking a step backwards. It may seem counter-intuitive but some graduates are choosing to pursue community college associate degrees, after their bachelor's.
"There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that this is on the rise as a phenomenon," says Doug Shapiro, executive research director of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.
The National Post Secondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) estimates that during the 2007-2008 academic year, 8% of entering community college students had already completed their bachelor's degrees. New Program Seeks to Rebuild Universities in Myanmar
By The Institute of International Education on Tuesday announced a new program for American colleges interested in establishing ties with universities in Myanmar, also known as Burma, to help rebuild the country’s higher-education system. The new effort was introduced shortly after President Obama’s recent visit to the country, in which he spoke at the University of Yangon. The country’s flagship higher-education institution fell deep into disarray during years of military rule. The program is a Myanmar offshoot of the IIE’s International Academic Partnerships Program, which has helped American colleges cement ties with institutions in China, India, and Brazil. The Myanmar effort, which IIE called “broader in scope” than its programs elsewhere, involves institutions that “have significant experience with the country, whether through diaspora students and faculty on their campuses or through previous work in the country,” IIE said in a news release.Plan could open way for thousands of Asian students

Top universities in the US are teaming up with two local community colleges to roll out online learning courses to students. By using edX - the e-learning platform founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - the faculties intend to transform classroom education in various institutions.Due to begin next spring, the project will offer individuals at the Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown and MassBay Community College a modified version of edX's Introduction to Computer Science and Programming class.
This will include both in-class instruction at both facilities, while the teaching of three MIT professors will be provided via a digital learning portal to supplement the education. So that the programme can go ahead, it is to receive $1 million (£630 million) funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is looking to explore how high-quality education from notorious universities can be adapted for use alongside the instruction of local staff. Technology, culture, English skills and more are attracting them to India. Every year, we celebrate our country's Independence Day with flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes. We sing our national anthem with great pride.Well, this year, the students at the South Asian University in Delhi, launched by SAARC in 2010, observed not one, but two Independence Day celebrations. On August 14, 11 pm, a two-hour event was held where the students of Pakistan first presented cultural programmes and sang the Pakistani national anthem in the presence of the entire university comprising students of the eight SAARC nations -- Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh and recent entrant Afghanistan. Should International Students Take the ACT?

When it comes to preparing to apply to U.S. colleges, many international students take the SAT, a standardized test that gauges college readiness. But the SAT is not the only option prospective college students have. Another test, the ACT, is accepted by all U.S. colleges as well. The ACT surveys knowledge learned, whereas the SAT focuses in part on critical thinking and reasoning. And it's an increasingly popular test choice: For the first time last year, more graduating seniors in the United States had taken the ACT than the SAT. While the number of international students choosing the ACT is rising, students from abroad still represent a much smaller portion of testers than their domestic peers, says Jon Erickson, president of ACT's education division.
