Next HUMANE Seminar: Edinburgh 22-23 September 2011

http://www.mruni.eu/mru_lt_dokumentai/apie_mru/naryste_organizacijose/humane_1.gifHUMANE - Heads of University Management & Administration Network in Europe
HUMANE was set up in 1997 with the aim of grouping all Heads of university administration in Europe in an informal network devoted to professional development and best practice. It has from the outset received encouragement and financial support from the European Commission. HUMANE is a European Network of 200 heads of administration from 20 countries, exchanging expertise and good practices, and contributing to the professional development of its members. Every year, six seminars are organised on key issues linked to university management, i.e. for example governance; financial management; human resource management. The ESMU-HUMANE Winter School is a one week intensive training programme for senior university administrators. Visit the HUMANE website for a full overview of activities.

Our next HUMANE Seminar will be hosted by the Edinburgh Napier University on Thursday 22 to Friday 23 September (note Thursday to Friday format). The theme will be Structures.
Edinburgh Abstract:

Most universities in our HUMANE membership have, over the past decade, embarked on restructuring - whether of academic, administrative and support structures, financial restructuring, or governance arrangements.  Some of this has been driven by individual universities themselves, some as a result of external stimuli from, for example, Government or Government agencies, or voluntary or other type of amalgamations.
How effective has this activity been in making our institutions more effective academically, more efficient administratively or more competitive?
Is further restructuring inevitable as a result of the current economic slow-down?  Will this be driven by governments, and if so, will governments, in effect, dictate or force further change to our structures?
Here’s the following speakers:
Keynote Session: University structures: should form follow function? John Hogan, Registrar, Newcastle University (UK)
University structures: past, present and future, Harry Fekkers, Counselor for Research and Innovation, Universiteit Maastricht (NL)
Restoring good governance at an institution in crisis, Peter West, Former Secretary to the University, University of Strathclyde (UK)
The impact of the Finnish New University Act, Antti Savolainen, Director of Administrative Services, University of Helsinki (FI)
Restructuring Higher Education: a view from the Netherlands, Mieke Zaanen, Secretary General, Universiteit van Amsterdam (NL)
Shared services: new structures and barriers to change, Nigel Paul, Director of Corporate Services, University of Edinburgh (UK)

9th HUMANE Winter School Alumni Network Seminar, 30 September - 1 October 2011, Bologna. Developing professional skills for the university services of the future

The seminar will focus on the skills needed to deal with academics, to deal with developments in
specific service areas, to deal with the concept of services, and to deal with the transition from
administration to services.
